My Mom Always Said I Was Different
I have seen and have brought my children to many doctors, every one unable or unwilling (due to lack of time, interest, or knowledge) to help us to unravel the seemingly mysterious symptoms we have had over the years. The most recent doctor literally shrugged her shoulders and said: “I can’t help you. I can’t even think of anyone who can help you. Sorry.”
This doctor was scared off by the complex nature of my symptoms. My mind screamed, “hot potato!” and I actually think I even said those words out loud! I understood where it came from, this fear and lack of the time and expertise she would have needed to partner with me. I tried to have compassion for her, but her response made no sense to me. It would certainly not be something I would say to someone coming to me for help.
Personally, I am intrigued by complexity. I see answers before people even finish telling me what they or their children have been experiencing. Where some are afraid or unwilling to put in the time, I get to work. I am not afraid of the challenge and am humbled by the privilege to work with families who are seeking my help. Where we repeatedly hear “I can’t,” from some, I say, “of course we can!” Where diagnosis is seen as the end, I see it as only the beginning of the road to recovery. And when people come to me frustrated, unsupported, confused, and afraid, I can’t wait to dig in and see their situations, their lives, dramatically improve.
I am in no way here to dog on doctors. Every situation is different, and no one goes into the profession planning to ignore their patients or be ineffective in their treatments. Yet, I must be completely honest about my experience and the experiences I hear about every single day in the parent groups I am part of or the emails and phone calls I receive. Either the healthcare professionals can’t help them, the ones that can are completely overwhelmed with full practices or are inaccessible to them, or the system does not allow for the very things that we need to dig in to complex illness such as longer visits, short wait times, follow-up, continual support, proper testing, effective therapies people can do themselves, and patient empowerment.
These families suffer while they beg, convince, and wait. And wait. And wait. All the while suffering unnecessarily because the answers are out there; they just can’t find the keys to all those locked doors.
I like unlocking doors.
I am not a doctor. And what I do is very different than what doctors or any other healthcare professionals do. I work with my clients to regain their health and that of their families in ways we have come to not expect from our healthcare professionals, but should.
